However, it has low tensile strength, ductility, and toughness. It also offers good resistance to wear and corrosion.
Mechanical properties
High compressive strength: Equivalent to low and medium-carbon steels.
Low tensile strength: This is its primary weakness.
Low ductility: The graphite flakes lack ductility.
Low toughness: The sharp edges of the graphite flakes can act as stress concentration points.
Good machinability: The graphite flakes allow for better chip formation during machining.
Excellent damping: It naturally dampens vibrations, making it suitable for applications where noise and vibration are a concern.
Physical and thermal properties
Corrosion resistance: Better than mild or wrought iron due to a protective film.
Hardness: Ranges from approximately 161 to 321 Vickers hardness.
Melting point: Approximately(1140-1200) °C (2084-2192 °F).
Thermal conductivity: Varies by grade, but is lower at higher temperatures.
Lubricity: Graphite flakes provide inherent lubrication.
